Everybody Loves Chiquito
My boyfriend and I have just recently adopted a male chihuahua whom we named Chiquito. We call him Chico for short, and my dad calls him by his pet name, Tochix. He’s an adorable, fawn-colored puppy who loves to play and eat, and sleep, and eat (I know chihuahuas should not be fed a lot, so we are in the process of feeding him down, hehe). He was the biggest of his litter of three, and at just two months old, he looks like he’s almost fully-grown. Some say that he looks like a miniature Siberian husky because of the color pattern on his face, particularly his white eyebrows. Hmm, a Siberian chihuahua? That’s interesting! Haha.
My dad, who currently has two teenage cats (a male and a female), didn’t like my idea of bringing home a puppy when I told him about it weeks before we adopted Chico. Sure, he loves dogs, but he prefers the bigger and lower maintenance breeds. However, all these was before he saw Chico. The moment he carried Chico in his arms, I knew he instantly fell in love. Well, he wasn’t the only one. When we first saw Chico when he was barely three weeks old, we couldn’t stop hugging him. He’s just too lovable. He stood out from the rest of the litter because he was bigger, was more active, and has an intriguing facial pattern. We knew right there and then that Chico is the puppy we need to bring home. A few weeks and a couple of vaccines later, we adopted him. Yay.
Unlike other chis who tend to be snippy, Chico is far more sociable. He doesn’t bark at strangers, he likes playing with children, and absolutely loves licking faces of people he’s fond of. He loves traveling and observing new places, and doesn’t mind getting stuck in the car for city trips. I have yet to see if he’ll do well in longer trips, though. Hehe. I have an inclination that he’ll be just like his adoptive mommy and daddy (me and my boyfriend!) and will always be a chi on the go.
Chico is just so endearing that people who’ve met him say the same things about him: Chico is a handsome and lovable dog! Well, we cannot agree more. My nephew Karel, and my niece Kylie, are absolutely crazy over Chico; my sister Abi, and my brother Dan are thinking of what gifts to give him for Christmas; my boyfriend’s 15-month old nephew Lionof squeals with delight when he sees Chico; my mom couldn’t stop gushing at how cute Chico is because he’s so tiny; and my friend Kimi (Chico’s ninang), is planning of dog-napping Chico (haha, kidding). Even my boyfriend’s mom and dad has fallen under Chico’s charm—at times, they get far more protective of Chico than we do! Everyone who’s met Chico only had the nicest things to say, and we’re sure you’ll do, too.
Lately, my boyfriend and I have been reading up about the proper way of caring for chihuahuas. As much as we would love to spoil Chico with all the pet goodies and pampering, we won’t. We don’t want a cute chihuahua who thinks he’s the boss and not his owners. We’ll teach Chico the best behavior and the cutest tricks, and give him what he absolutely needs (love and attention), but we won’t treat him like a spoiled dog.
So far, we have bought Chico a carrying cage, a feeding/drinking bowl, a towel, a harness, and a leash, all in blue. Next up in accessories are the following: a bed, a blanket (because Chis are sensitive to the cold), dog shirts, and dog toys. In the next few weeks, we’ll take him to his vet for his other vaccines, and to the grooming salon for a bath and nail clipping. As for now, I will continue getting Chico acquainted with people. So, will we see you at Chico’s next adventure?
Thank you hon, for your supposed ‘surprise’ gift, but you were just too excited so you told me about it a few days before we adopted Chico. Hehe. I love you.
Hon! Di naman eh. I rushed this blog entry kasi when I wrote it. Sorry. Hehe. Yes, I’ll post Chico’s photos soon. I love you.
Pics! where are the pics! hehehe..How does he react /treat your dad’s cats by the way? Just curious..:P
Jon! I’ll put up the photos soon.
Hmm, Chico doesn’t really mind the cats. In fact, when he first saw our female cat (who has a slight attitude problem, haha), he wanted to lick her nose. But our cat got mad, hissed angrily, puffed her self up, and walked away. Haha.

I will be the ultimate test of Chiquito’s supposed charm. All hail nonmammalian pets! (Oh, excluding Momo)
